Apparently that time has come, Enworld user Matthew Martin has found that the Barnes & Noble website shows dates and pricing for both the D&D Starter set and Player’s Handbook (PHB). The D&D Start Date is set to release on July 15. The B&N site allows pre-order pricing at $17.99, down from $19.99. The D&D Player’s Handbook is listed with a release date of August 19th. The pre-order price is $37.96, discounted from $49.95.
August 19th is just after GenCon (Aug 14-17th), so our money is on that it’ll be released at GenCon. If the D&D Starter set is released at July 15th, that’ll give players and DMs a month to use the new rules. The PHB of $49.95 seems a bit steep if Wizards of the Coast decides to stay with the traditional three book set of Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master Guide, and Monster Manual at the same price. It seems more likely that the PHB will be a hefty tome, well worth $50 and the other two core books will be less.
At the same time $20 for the D&D Starter set seems like a great deal and makes a great entry into the game. What are your thoughts?
